75T Quay Crane Verification – Port of Fremantle

A preliminary review of the available information confirmed that a design verification of the revised design was required

Our Client operates a container terminal in the Port of Fremantle, Western Australia.

Scope Of Work

To verify the design of a 75T Container Crane in terms of its compliance to AS1418.1,3 and 18 and to verify the design of the elevator to AS1735. Work included project management, establishing global reaction loads and a detailed FEA structural and mechanical assessment.

Project Challenges

  • The crane was being shipped from overseas while the verification was being carried-out by MAD3 (formerly Deacon Engineers)
  • For non-conformances that would need modifications, these would be done in-situ and urgently to get verification completed on time
  • Team of verifiers working simultaneously, therefore any individual non-conformances impacted the overall work being carried-out
  • The 80t rated capacity of the ‘heavy lift function’ was found non-conforming to AS1418.1, and was therefore de-rated to 75t
  • The selected wire rope of the main hoist was found non-conforming to AS1418.1 for the nominated mechanical classification of M8
  • Mechanical classification of the main hoist was then reduced to M6.

How We Managed This

  • Communicated directly with the manufacturer to obtain all required information to verify the manufacturers design
  • Informed our Client of any components, items, calculations, etc., which do not comply with Australian Standards or legislation for the Western Australia as applicable
  • Reviewed design calculations, detailed design drawings including materials specifications and manufacturing requirements, circuit diagrams
  • Provided a Design Verifiers Report
  • Provided a Design Verification Statement
  • Completed all items within forms as applicable for design registration submission to Worksafe WA.

Value Engineering

  • The fast-track verification of the container crane was completed on schedule, and relatively minor modifications had to be made
  • Design verification statement and verification summary report were produced by MAD3
  • This enabled the client to register the container crane with Worksafe, which is a regulatory requirement for classified plant such as this
  • The crane was successfully commissioned, tested and has been in use since 2015.
