This project also involved the verification of structural capacity for the installation of 2x new 65-ton cranes and design to strengthen the existing building structure that was built in 1971.
Scope of Work
- Conduct site survey to provide comprehensive condition report
- Assessment of the structural capacity of the existing building to support additional load in accordance with AS1418.18
- Design and documentation of strengthening works.
Project Challenges
- 45-year-old building, with limited As-Built information available
- Crane Standards at time of construction superseded
- Strict constructability requirements for strengthening works
- Strict requirement to minimize operational downtime
- Strengthening works to be undertaken in a live operational environment.
How We Managed This
- During the construction survey we were able to confirm that the As-Built structure was generally in accordance with the Design drawings provided by the client
- Comparison between previous and current standards allowed a preliminary indication on the outcome of the structural assessment
- The strengthening design was undertaken minimizing the weight of the structural element, each additional element weighing maximum 140 kg
- Safety in Design and Safety risk assessment were undertaken in conjunction with Aurizon.
Value Engineering
- MAD3 Engineering worked with Aurizon to produce a strengthening design that could be implemented with limited downtime and disruptions to the operation of the Depot.
- MAD3 provided technical assistance during the tender review process to ensure that the contractors were meeting Aurizon’s requirements and providing value for money.
